POM Real-Time Contingency Analysis (POM-RT RTCA)

POM-RT is an AC analysis application, which uses the full Newton-Raphson method to solve a nonlinear power flow model. This tool is intended to perform massive contingency analysis based on user selected lists, or automatically selected N-1, N-1-1 and N-2 contingency lists based on a user defined model element selection. The normal conditions (N-0) and each (N-k) contingency are applied, while simultaneously monitoring multiple constraints: voltage stability, thermal overload, voltage range and voltage drop violations. These constraints can be monitored over the entire system model or any portion thereof. Several modes of operation are offered by POM-RT: interactive, automatic and script-based operation.

POM is built for massive automated AC contingency analysis, with hundreds of thousands to millions of contingencies (18 million contingencies is the largest run so far) being applied within one simulation run in planning studies, and tens of thousands of contingencies being applied within one run in real-time environment. There is no limit on a number of contingencies that could be applied within a single run.

POM performs the AC contingency analysis extremely fast, and pre-built multi-threading capabilities allow the users to further speed up computations. Different limits and solution parameters may be set for the N-0, N-1, N-2 contingencies within the same simulation run. It features flexible reporting. RTCA output can be saved in MS Excel format, comma-delimited format, MS Access, SQLite database, or in other user-defined formats.

POM-RT offers pre-built activities as well as the capability to customize the analysis using scripting. Three scripting languages are available in POM-RT:

  • Microsoft® VB.Net
  • Python
  • C#

Graphical capabilities incorporated in POM-RT enable visualizing the power system behavior. While easy to use, POM-RT provides a great degree of flexibility in making a comprehensive analysis of a system.

NYPA described POM benefits for AC transfer analysis as follows:

  • Methodology is simple and user-friendly.
  • Methodology is very fast. Power transfer limits (voltage, thermal, or voltage stability) are determined simultaneously for an extended contingency list without a user’s intervention.
  • Methodology is accurate. Power transfer limits (thermal or voltage) are calculated using AC load flow.

Graphical output helps user visualize the system’s performance.

POM-RT is CIM compatible. It also reads export files in node-breaker format from existing EMS vendors. POM-RT also directly reads load flow and dynamic model data in Siemens PTI PSS/E and GE PSLF formats.
